Thank you so much for the amazing web cam images of the house finches. I went looking for info on finches this morning whilst watching my own couple feeding at my living room window from the 2L coke bottle attached to the Lee Valley perch. It works really well for finches and chickadees and the occasional towhee. It has so far defeated the efforts of the darn Stellars Jays much to their chagrin. The feeder which attaches directly to the window glass with suckers is an excellent way to view the birds up close and personal. They have an orderly line-up along our glass railing on the deck as there is room for only two at a time. I use the hulled pieces of sunflower seed from the Wild Bird store in North Vancouver so there is no mess attracting other wildlife. Again thanks for your efforts it was good to see other aspects of the lifecycle of these engaging birds.

A bit of excitement this morning at WGG ... but unfortunately, in the back yard rather than in the front yard where the webcam is. While I often see balloons (you actually hear 'em first - the burners make a bit of noise) and occasionally they will set down in a large open area further South of this picture, it's the first time I've ever seen 'em set down in a small strip of open space right behind the house.

I can't find any information anywhere on the web about when finches get out of the nest. I have 3 babies and they look like they are about to jump. Not sure when they were bron but I do have photos. Do they stay in the nest for days or is it weeks or what? Thanks for any info. Thank you so much for sharing your finch story. I'm in Livermore, CA and I've been watching a finch nest in my porch eaves for 3-4 weeks now. 5 babies doing well, lots of poop and I noticed the area swarming with mites this morning. They have been stretching their wings and should be flying off in the next few days. I'm just hoping that the area is too small for the nearby cats or scrub jays to get into. I'm sorry you lost several little ones and thank you for the reminder that this type of thing can happen in nature.

Mr. Grass replies at 11:44 - I occasionally will post advance notice of lawn mowing ... but HEY, there is all sort of exciting things that happen spontaneously at WGG so you should be watching 24 hours a day. For instance, the Tru Green Lawn Care guys just stopped by and said the grass is looking mighty fine! ;-)

Thank you for making this informative site. We found a young house finch in the yard today. The parents were near by all day feeding the young bird. We set up a Finch cam this year, and were enjoying a placid Mama, proud Papa, and finally the first hatchling, then a second, then a third. And then we had the same experience with a blue jay taking 3 2-second forays at the nest, and the babies were all gone. They were only about 2 days old, still wobbly-headed little guys who could do nothing to save themselves. Very sad. I didn't know blue jays were carnivores until I read your account. Thanks for the information. Commiseration loves company. Mama is still on the nest but I don't think there are any more babies to be born. Hope springs eternal.

I was looking at your old finch webcam. I have a nest outside my front door - built into a decorative wreath. I'm concerned the wreath isn't stable enough so wondered how long between the finches being hatched and the little guy/gal flying off?

Mountains are getting a couple of feet, but temperatures here are right around freezing, so more rain than snow ... but probably going to have a couple of inches overnight as the temps drop. I happen to look out my bedroom window one day and stuck in between the screen (it wasn't pushed all the way over to one side) and the window, was a birds nest. After a little research I found out that they are house finchs. I came across this website and I loved how you put up the web cam. I wish I could do that as well. I have 5 eggs in the nest now and its been about a week since they were laid. One more week to go. The daddy stops by every once in a while and makes a whole bunch of noise. I'm a little worried because its still april and unseasonably cold. I hope the babys can survive and fly away before any animals, or my dad, find them!

If we had a webcam over our backyard it would show a pair of mallard ducks that visit twice a day like clockwork -- once in the a.m. and once around dinnertime. They came last year about this time for about 2 weeks as well. After that we had a pack of black foxes visiting the yard.

Hello, my name is tom and I have a strange smell about me. It smells of raw onions with milk. Every Tuesday it has a distinct orange and lime smell. Every now and then I smell of cheerio's. My hamster smells of vinegar and my fish smells of bananas. My brother smells of cheese and cherries and my sister smells of horse and she also looks like one even though she's a cow. My sister tried to live on 1 dead horse for 16 weeks but after 10 seconds she went to Tescos and stole some fair-trade chocolate I don't call that fair. One day I tried to bite a pig's nose of a living pig but it smelled of burnt toast and I don't like burnt toast. To show that I had forgiven the pig I gave it an underwater drum kit the pig played a 10 minuet song and drowned. Then my bananary smelling fish and a couple of his mates started swimming into the drum kit to play it. They played the wheels on the bus go round and round

Mr.Grass, you and your kids should build a snowman, and put the web cam on medium close up of it, then change it in the winter months from watching grass grow to watching snow men melt. so the winter months don't get to boring after you take down your Christmas display:)
