I just found your website today - here in San Marcos, Calif., we've had a house finch family build a nest in, you guessed it, a wreath on our front door! The eggs just hatched yesterday, so it's fun to see where hopefully this will take us. I wish I had a webcam to set-up, too, but fortunately I can keep an eye on the Finch family (we've named the father Atticus - hahaha) through the window in our front door. However, what's even stranger in our situation is that not more than a few feet away, in a small China Doll tree, there is a Mourning Dove nest. They must have a mutual protection agreement, because they don't harass one another and it even seems like the Dove family (no names for them yet) keep an eye on the wreath nest while the Finches are away. :)

Thank you for the amazing pictures and stories of the House Finch Family! We have a nest in our back yard and the three babies will be flying soon. Their nest is about eleven feet up with a cement patio below. How do they learn to fly? Will they fall? How can I protect them? I hate to rain on your parade with my comment, but as a wildlife rehabilitator, I feel it necessary to share my views with you. While it is lovely to see a webcam of a nest to observe the development from egg to fledge, it is not acceptable to disturb a nest by intruding so closely with a camera. This adds a great deal of stress to the parent birds, more than you'll ever know. Stress can kill a bird! I hope you will consider this in your future nest observing activities.
Mr. Grass replies at 07:44 - Since the House Finch nest was located next to the garage, the parents would fly off every time it was opened. So the webcam install and misc. pictures were taken then to minimize disruption to the birds. My guess is the Blue Jay that came by and ate three of the four babies probably caused more stress ...
And speaking of house finches, they returned just yesterday ... this time nesting in a wreath on our front door - needless to say, we have blocked it to minimize disturbing the birds. And (of course) a webcam has been setup to keep an eye on it - more pictures of the house finch nest here.

Mr. Grass replies at 12:27 - Actually, this IS typical for Colorado - March is actually our snowiest month ... although yea, it was 65°F and sunny yesterday ... and probably will be that way on Sunday. BTW, while it's not sticking very much on the roads, the grass has at least 6" of new snow on it ... with more coming!
